Continuing Professional Development

Continuing Professional Development (CPD) is a systematic and planned process to foster a commitment to life-long learning amongst Members via the maintenance, enhancement, and development of knowledge, skills and competencies of the Members required for the performance of their professional responsibilities with the highest integrity and the ultimate aim of delivering the best service to the Islamic finance industry and its stakeholders.

It is the responsibility of each Member from CIIF to undertake sufficient CPD that is related to the Member’s work and professional responsibilities. Because of that, CIIF came out with a planned programme of CPD activity that will assist Members to keep up-to-date in terms of knowledge and practice in order to provide the best service to clients and inspire confidence in employers.

CPD Requirements

CPD is compulsory to all Fellow and Chartered Members and voluntary for Honorary, Student and Associate Members except those exempt under guideline number 7. Undergoing the CPD will ensure that you have the necessary knowledge and skills to meet the challenges of your profession.

If a Member has collected CPD points in excess of the prescribed minimum CPD points, such Member is allow to carry forward not more than ten (10) CPD points from the current CPD Cycle to the next CPD Cycle. Each CPD Cycle shall be for a period of three (3) calendar years.

CPD Records

Members are required to record their CPD activities online in the membership portal and it is important for Members to retain their CPD records for a period of three (3) years.The CPD records required to be retained include:date of CPD activity;CPD provider;description of the CPD activity;whether the CPD activity is structured (formal) or unstructured (informal);method of learning;number of CPD hours;number of CPD points collected; and evidence of attendance, participation or completion such as enrolment records, certificate of attendance, certificate of completion, confirmation in writing of participation by CPD Provider and such.

The CPD records required to be retained include:

  • date of CPD activity;
  • CPD provider;
  • description of the CPD activity;
  • whether the CPD activity is structured (formal) or unstructured (informal);
    method of learning;
  • number of CPD hours;
  • number of CPD points collected; and evidence of attendance, participation or completion such as enrolment records, certificate of attendance, certificate of completion, confirmation in writing of participation by CPD Provider and such.

CPD Activities

Members may undertake any life-long activities that is relevant to their current work or responsibilities through learning activities that are acceptable as structured CPD and unstructured CPD. Structured CPD is any form of formal learning activity that is designed to achieve specific learning outcomes while unstructured CPD is any informal learning activity such as on-the-job training, online research, self-study, casual reading of professional journals and participation in events where the focus is on knowledge sharing. 

Members may undertake any life-long activities that is relevant to their current work or responsibilities through learning activities that are acceptable as structured CPD and unstructured CPD. Structured CPD is any form of formal learning activity that is designed to achieve specific learning outcomes while unstructured CPD is any informal learning activity such as on-the-job training, online research, self-study, casual reading of professional journals and participation in events where the focus is on knowledge sharing.

Participation by a Member in a CPD activity must be for a duration of at least sixty (60) minutes (“Contact Hour”) excluding social or ceremonial events (e.g. opening or closing ceremonies), breaks, meals, receptions or other informal functions associated with CPD activities but not forming part of the professional development programme.

CPD points are calculated based on the following formulae:

CPD Exemption:

Members subject to mandatory CPD may submit a written application to the CIIF for an exemption, fully or partly, from compliance with the CPD requirements in the following circumstances:

  • The Member is aged sixty (60) years (or such other minimum age of retirement as may be prescribed by the domestic law of the respective Member) and above as at 1 January 2019; 
  • the Member has retired from gainful employment and business activity;
  • the Member suffers from serious illness which prevents participation in CPD activities (relevant medical documentation to confirm is required);
  • the Member has onerous caring duties for an immediate family member;
  • (v) the Member is on a career break or is unemployed;
  • the Member is domiciled in a country which has yet to recognise the CIIF;
  • the Member is currently not in a role or profession that is directly or indirectly related to Islamic finance; or
  • such other circumstances as the CIIF may decide from time to time.
  • Applications for exemption from CPD must be made in writing accompanied by supporting evidence such as a medical certificate or letter from the employer confirming a leave of absence from work.

 

The CIIF shall reserve the right to grant such exemption or otherwise in its absolute discretion upon consideration of the circumstances.​
